Description
The pear tree is a fruit tree belonging to the order Rosaceae and the family Rosaceae and is cultivated in all temperate countries.
It comes from the areas around the Caspian Sea and was found in Greece since ancient times. In Europe it has been cultivated since the 17th century.
In Greece, the systematic cultivation of pears is mainly in Macedonia (about 40% of domestic production), the Peloponnese (27% of production), Western Sterea and Thessaly.
The pear is the fruit of the pear tree.
It has a long shape and narrows at the end where the stem is located while it is wide at the bottom. There are also varieties of pears with an apple shape. The pears are light green, greenish yellow, yellowish, light yellow, green with red depending on the variety.
Inside the flesh is usually white, softer than apples and sweeter.
They are eaten fresh, made into compotes, used in confectionery, made into jams. They contain vitamin C, calcium, niacin, vitamin B6, phosphorus and potassium.
Italy has the largest production in the world. It is followed by France, Japan and China. Greece ranks 6th in Europe with 140,000 tonnes per year.
